Colorectal Cancer Awareness

Colon cancer is a leading killer but caught early, it's very treatable.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and Memorial Health System encourages everyone to take charge of their own health and protect themselves against this deadly disease.

As the second most lethal form of cancer, prevention is key.

When found early, there is a 90 percent cure rate.

Don't be a statistic.

If you are over 50, with or without symptoms, schedule a colonoscopy soon.

Dr. William Cline says there are things you can do to reduce the risk.

"Probably the most important thing is dietary changes in terms of a healthy lifestyle, so exercise certainly helps to reduce the risk of colon cancer... regular exercise, 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week is good for almost everyone to do," he says.

Cline says also make sure to increase the fiber in your diet.

He encourages patients to use a 30-gram a day guideline.
