Community Service Day

Garden lovers took their skills to a whole new level Saturday morning serving the community.

It's all part of the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department's Community Service Day.

People from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-ED) and Americorps came out to help put together some community gardens for everyone in Parkersburg.

They had no trouble getting their hands dirty planting seeds, tilling and putting down fertilizer and mulch.

It's a way for everyone in the community to learn the importance of choosing healthy foods and maintaining a balanced diet.

"We have a food pantry where we give out three to four thousand pounds of food each month and we're telling each of these recipients that what they really need to do is supplement they're food by coming out here," says First Lutheran Church Trustee, Don Ery.

Gardens were planted at First Lutheran Church, The Lynn Street Church of Christ and the Mid-Ohio Valley Fellowship Home.
