Rt. 16 in Pleasants County Open After Monday Night Accident

One lane of West Virginia Route 16 in Pleasants County is now open.

A tractor trailer flipped around 8:00 Monday night, about two miles down the road off Route 2.

The driver - 61-year-old Michael Wheeler, of Marietta - was trapped inside the cabin.

Emergency crews were able to free him.

He was flown by helicopter to Charleston Area Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition Tuesday afternoon in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

The St. Marys Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident.

The trailer leaked gasoline and diesel fuel on the road.

One lane of the road was opened around 6 A.M. Tuesday.

West Virginia State Police is investigating the accident.

At around 8 Monday night the St Marys Volunteer Fire Department responded to Route 16 in Pleasants County.

A tractor trailer had flipped about two miles down the road off Route 2.

The driver was trapped inside the cabin. Emergency crews were able to free him. He was flown by helicopter to an area hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

The trailer was leaking gasoline and diesel fuel on the road.

Fire Chief Danny DeMoss says the situation is stable, but the road will remain closed until a Hazmat crew has cleaned up the area.

The wreck happened in front of a home on Route 16. As a precaution everyone has been evacuated.

West Virginia State Police is investigating what caused the accident.

St. Marys VFD Chief Danny DeMoss says the tractor trailer was carrying gasoline and diesel fuel when it flipped over at 8 p.m.

Chief DeMoss says the driver was trapped inside the semi, but crews were able to get him out. He was taken by helicopter to an area hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

Route 16 remains closed to traffic. Chief DeMoss says the situation is under control, and there is no danger of fire. He says the Hazmat team has been called in to do cleanup. The crash happened in front of a home on Rt. 16, and DeMoss says that family has been evacuated as a safety precaution.

A semi-truck crash in Pleasants County has part of Route 16 shut down.

Our reporter on the scene says there is gas and diesel all over the roadway.

No word yet on the driver of the semi.
