Update: 8/12/2014 12:00 P.M.
Summer is still far from over, but with schools opening earlier in August, the area's public pools are getting ready to shut down for the year.
Sunday, August 17, is the last day for this year for the pools in Parkersburg, Vienna, Williamstown and Belpre.
In Beverly, it's Tuesday, August 19. The Marietta Aquatic Center also plans its last daily swims for August 19.
The Pleasants County pool will close for weekday swimming Wednesday, August 13. But there will be nighttime swimming Monday and Tuesday, August 18 and 19, and the pool will also be open the weekends of August 16-17 and 23-24.
The calendar says otherwise.
But, for most of us, summer begins with Memorial Day weekend.
And a couple of the area pools open this weekend for the season.
Although the Belpre Civitan Park pool may not open until May 30th, the Marietta Aquatic Center and the Beverly pool both plan to open Saturday.
The pools in Wood County, including Parkersburg, will open June 11th, after school lets out.
And preparations for pool season have been under way since we were still up to our ankles in snow.
"For the preparations, we typically start around February," says Mike Bishman, who manages most of the area's pools. "With the lifeguards, there are some professional organizations along with pool management who hold classes. We like to have it then because we like to plan ahead of time, and we go clear up through May."
While it's always a struggle, Bishman says local pools have enough lifeguards for pool season.
Applications are still being taken, however, just in case openings come up during the summer.
