$6 million in construction projects are planned this year for Wood County. But that's only $1 million more than what's slated for Morgan County in Ohio.
That's a reflection of belt-tightening at the West Virginia Department of Transportation, due to falling revenues. Half of that total will go for a pair of resurfacing projects beginning in July.
"On I-77, we're going to be resurfacing from Buck Run overpass to the Mineral Wells overpass, and that's about a $2.3 million job," says District Three Engineer Rusty Roten. "West Virginia route 95 from Division Street up toward Larkmead to route 68, starts in July, and that's a little over a million dollar job."
Continuing is the $22 million widening of West Virginia route two near the interstate, which began last year.
Roten says not as much money is available for road projects this year, because of diminishing gas tax revenues. That's even though gas prices continue to be high.
"It's not based on dollar sales, it's based on per gallon. People are buying less gallons as they move toward more fuel-efficient cars. So that has had a significant impact on our revenues."
Ohio's District 10 also has a continuing project: construction of the route 33 bypass in Athens County.
A bridge painting on route seven and relocaton project on route 821 will total nearly $3 million combined. Major widening and resurfacing projects are planned in Morgan and Noble counties.
