The Humane Society of Parkersburg and the Wood County Commission have a contract for another year.

But that doesn't mean they aren't thinking about their options.

The agreement, which also includes Parkersburg, was approved Thursday by the Wood County Commission.

Wood County might still look into ways of someday providing its own animal control, as do the cities of Vienna and Williamstown.

"If we want to have further discussions, we can," says Commission President Blair Couch. "But we budgeted this money, and we're prepared to spend it. And the volunteers who work so hard at the humane society to take care of these animals, they do a great job."

Couch adds other counties had to spend as much as a half a million dollars in start-up costs to have their own animal control.

That involves hiring officers and buying equipment.
