A Jackson County man pleads guilty to theft of Social Security benefits.

Authorities say in October 2008 Michael Smith of Sandyville started receiving Social Security benefits on behalf of his uncle, James Conrad.

Conrad died in April 2009.

Smith's right to get the payments ended at that point but authorities say he continued accepting them.

They say from May 2009 to July 2010 Smith cashed Social Security checks totaling more than $10,000.

Smith pleaded guilty to theft of government money.

He faces a maximum of five years behind bars.

Sentencing is set for May 7.
