Job Hunting in the MOV

By  |

In nine Mid-Ohio Valley counties including Wood and Pleasants, a little more than 160 people registered for the first time with Workforce West Virginia training services last month. Still one administrator says even though there is still a great need for jobs, some employers are hiring again.

The number of people walking through these doors continues to rise, especially after recent lay offs like the one at Fenton Art Glass last week.

"We continue to see a great need for jobs in the area however when we see some of the larger players in the area saying we're hiring again, we take that as a good indicator for the region and it gives us hope but we also have smaller employers who are coming back and saying OK we have a job posting," said Wade Coffindaffer, director of One Stop Operations for Workforce West Virginia.

One of those businesses that has been hiring is DuPont.

Some more good news he says is over the last five months 43 percent of the people who were laid off from a local plant have been hired by other employers. Plus people are needed in some specific fields.

"The largest segment would be higher skill level of industrial or manufacturing and of course as always, health care," he said.

Their office not only helps unemployed workers in the Mid-Ohio Valley look for new careers, training and job placement, they also help employers-who meet certain criteria-cover on the job training costs.

"Our program allows an employer to take a person on to their payroll but be reimbursed for a portion of the earnings paid out to our customer who is employed under that program."

Companies interested in this program should call Workforce West Virginia at 304-420-4531.

Unemployed workers should also call the number listed above who are interested in their services.

The agency provides work readiness workshops free to the public at 304 Lakeview Center but if you are interested you need to call ahead to register.
