It was a muddy mess and a major headache.
Athens residents awoke to a very wet city that literally spilled into another day.
"Yesterday (Monday), at around 7:30 a.m. we had a water line break on one of our major streets, North Court Street," says Ron Lucas, deputy service safety director for the City of Athens. "Soon after that we discovered another break on Pine Street. After we got that fixed we actually had another break, which is the one we're currently repairing."
City officials rushed to make things right.
"This particular break is a main transmission line from the Highland Reservoir that feeds a significant section of town," Lucas says.
They worked with Ohio University to get more pumps and get the water pumped out of the hole.
"It ruptured in such a way that we couldn't just put a clamp on it and it was putting out so much water that we couldn't get in there with our pump system," Lucas says.
Officials say a reduction in water pressure hit much of the city during the physical repair, because crews were put at risk with backfeed from the water as they tried to fix the line.
"We reduced the pressure so a lot of the city will be back into regular pressure, but we have to re-energize the line before we get the center part of the city back in the water," Lucas says.
All repairs have since been completed and full water service will be restored after the reservoir refills.
"What we can expect is some form of boil water that will be issued at least in the vicinity of this water line break," Lucas says. "But possibly citywide due to the amount of residents this particular water line serves."
