A new scam to warn you about, targeting recipients of Ohio's Home Energy Assistance Program, otherwise known as "HEAP".
Cases have been reported of a caller from a 1-800 number claiming to be a representative of "HEAP", telling the victim that they've been rewarded extra assistance due to the recent cold snap.
Then the caller requests banking information and even Social Security numbers from the victim so the funds can be deposited.
When one victim refused to give out their information the caller said a check would be issued instead.
People are urged not to give out any personal or banking information over the phone and to report any suspicious calls to law enforcement immediately.
