Feather extensions were the craze this summer, but a new hair accessory is taking its place. Pink Strands for the Cause is a national fundraiser for hair salons selling pink extensions to customers at a reduced price.
Local salon Harner Hair Company is participating in this campaign for the first time. "We just thought it would be something fun for all ages to do an raise awareness," says owner Katie Harner.
For the month of October salons nationwide are putting in pink hair extensions to support breast cancer awareness. At Harner, customers have the choice between three different colors of pink.
"So far several today, a really good turnout," says Harner. "Probably ten-fifteen and there's still a waiting room full. So we're really excited and we're going to go ahead and offer the promo all month long by appointment and hopefully we can raise a lot of money."
Extensions are $10 and half of all proceeds go to cancer research. The campaign is sponsored by the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Through their efforts they have already raised $5,000 and hope to reach their goal of $65,000 by the end of the month.
Harner advertised the fundraiser the best way she knew how. "Facebook of course. So we set it up as an event on Facebook and we just told all of our clients. So far we've had a really great reception," says Harner.
One customer this afternoon wanted to combine charity with style. "Well I wanted to get it done because my friend told me about it and I like supporting breast cancer awareness and I thought it would look pretty," says client Brittany Morris.
Harner Hair Company is taking appointments throughout the month. They can be reached at 304-424-7405. To learn more about the foundation or to make a donation, visit www.pinkstrandsforthecause.com.
