OH Sees Less Deer Kills, Gun Season

After a week long deer gun season in Ohio the number killed is lower than last year.

The Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife says 86,964 deer were killed during the week long deer gun season, that's down 3.7 percent, compared to last year.
Washington County does rank seventh in the state with over two-thousand deers but saw a nearly three-percent decrease.
But D-N-R says more hunters are taking up archery which is actually ranking higher than previous years and still has weeks to go.

"There's a lot of factors at play, so we aren't too concerned at this point," explains Ohio DNR, Divisions of Wildlife's Lindsay Rist. "You know, weather can be a factor, we were actually in a different week during the calendar this year than we normally are, there was some unseasonably warm weather. Once we get to the end of the full deer season next February then we'll have a better idea of how this season compared to last."

"You have to look at the economic impact that hunters are having on the area, our non-resident license sales have gone up in recent years as well as the deer permit so we know people are coming in from out of state to hunt deer, they're looking for a place to stay, they're going to be staying at restaurants and using businesses in the local area, so that's always a good thing."

DNR also shows more registered license compared to previous years.

Ohio does rank eighth nationally in annual hunting-related sales, DNR says hunting makes an over eight-hundred-million dollar impact in Ohio."You have to look at the economic impact that hunters are having on the area, our non-resident license sales have gone up in recent years as well as the deer permit so we know people are coming in from out of state to hunt deer, they're looking for a place to stay, they're going to be staying at restaurants and using businesses in the local area, so that's always a good thing."

Deer-gun season reopens for two days, Dec. 15 and Dec. 16.
Archery season remains open through Feb. 3.
Ohio’s deer-muzzle loader season is Jan. 5 through the Jan. 8.
