UPDATE 12/26/2013 4:30 PM

It's been over two years between planning and construction, but the Putnam Community Water Plant in Devola will soon be up and running.

Operations Manager Jay Huck says Devola residents have reason to be excited.

The new high filtration system is to be online by the end of January.

Construction is 92 percent done.

This system was required by the EPA to help with the nitrates and contaminants in Devola's drinking water.

"This is a big step, this is a major project for Devola," Huck says. "We service about 950 customers so, probably going to notice it in the taste, and they will not need their water softeners anymore their hard water which is a common problem here in the Mid-Ohio Valley."

Huck says as it finishes up they are currently working on the plumbing and electric and then there will be a test run to make sure everything is working properly.

Once they fully open he says they want to have an open house so the community can come see everything.

A proposed project by the Putnam Community Water Corporation to address elevated nitrate levels in the water.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency addressed concerns from Devola citizens.

These plans add a new reverse osmosis water treatment system that discharges reject water into Muskingum River.

The wastewater discharge permit makes sure discharge meets all applicable water quality standards.

"It can be a health concern at high levels. Especially for the very young and elderly so we want to be sure and address it before it becomes an issue. It's not at levels that would be considered a health hazard at this time, but we do want to but we do want to make sure that it stays low so that the drinking water is safe," says Ohio EPA Citizen Contact Amber Finkelstein.
