As the oil and gas industry becomes very prevalent in our area, many are asking questions about its safety.
A meeting was packed Wednesday at Safety Council as the featured speaker with Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program, Charlie Dixon spoke about safety concerns in the industry.
He says you are only as safe as your worst employee, which means the training workers go through is very important.
"We start that foundation early on so that workers are aware of what they are doing and why they are doing it. And start to build that whole safety culture into them because if you don't build that culture, then accidents can happen," he says.
Workers take an internationally recognized course called SafeLand, focusing on land based operations.
Dixon says it is an industry that has seen a rise in death but the national safety numbers do not show constant accidents in the field.
He says mistakes on the job can be very dangerous
