Parkersburg Fishing Derby

By  |

Kids, get your fishing poles ready for the 33rd Annual Parkersburg Fishing Derby going on rain or shine Saturday, April 20.

Three different age groups can take part: three to six-year-olds, seven to 10, and 11 to 14-year-olds will start fishing at 15 minute intervals, the youngest going first. The event is going on from nine to noon.

“Kids really enjoy coming out to fish; it has grown into what it is today," says Steve Cox, assistant public works director for the city. "We put over a thousand pounds of fish in both ponds and we have door prizes every year. We have a lot of stuff donated to us, a lot of it we buy and it's just a real good time for the kids.”

They have a golden trout at each pond and if you can catch it during the derby, it's worth a hundred dollars.

Cox says it's been caught at Southwood Park three different times over the years, but never at City Park during the derby.

We'll see what happens this year.
