UPDATE: 7/16/2013 3:30 PM
A fire tied up traffic on Route Two in both directions in Pleasants County early Tuesday morning. Flames took out the old Highway Grill in Belmont.
A community staple destroyed as a fire ripped through the upstairs. People in Belmont came out to see the damage at the restaurant known to them as the Highway Grill.
"Good food there at one time until this happened. I don't know what happened but I heard it on the scanner. It's a shame though," says Belmont resident, Charles.
While investigators still aren't saying what caused the fire, people in town say the building's been vacant for years.
"It's been 10 years, I think.I don't know if it's been quite that long, but it's been quite awhile," says Janice who also lives nearby.
A building destroyed, but memories remain. Janice says she'll never forget the great food at the Highway Grill.
"There was a good cook there, Mrs. Powell, she was a cook here several years ago. She made awful good pies."
Investigators are still working to figure out what caused the fire. No word on if there were any utilities on in the building.
There may be possible delays on Rt. 2 near the Belmont area early Tuesday morning.
Pleasants County Dispatchers say there is a fire at the old Highway Grill. They could not give us any more information and could not confirm if the road was blocked.
However, callers driving on Rt. 2 near that area around 4:15 AM until 5 AM say they were completely stopped with traffic blocked in both directions.
