Snow Days Impact School Calendar

Thursday is the first day of spring but local school systems are still dealing with the effects of the winter.

That, in some cases, means the school year will be longer than planned.

That's thanks to the missed days that have piled up along with the snow and cold temperatures this winter.

The Wood County Board of Education Tuesday night moved the last day of school to June 10.

That means the final day students have to attend.

The last day for teachers is June 11.

"Students don't normally attend unless there's a planned program where they come in for tutoring," says Judy Johnson, Director of Curriculum/Instruction. "But June 11 being the last day for school, we probably won't see too many students."

Some Ohio districts are awaiting the governor's signature on a bill extending the calamity days for the Buckeye State.

Most currently have set the last day of classes for late May or early June.

Other planned last school days for the 2013-2014 school year:

Pleasants County: May 30
Ritchie County: June 3 or 4
Jackson County: June 5 (classes will be dismissed early that day)
Wirt County: June 3

In Ohio:

Belpre: May 21
Warren: May 29
Fort Frye: May 22
Wolf Creek: May 26
Frontier: June 6

Marietta City Schools plans to determine its final school day at its next board of education meeting, set for March 24.
