The Sweet Corn Festival takes over Muskingum Park in Marietta.
It's an event organized by the community...for the benefit of the community.
"The point being is investing back in the community. This is a great thing. You can come down here and you don't have to spend a dime. there's face painting. There's kids activities but for the older folks there is a competitive corn hole competition. There are vendors here. But sweet corn at a dollar an ear you can not beat that deal. Knowing that that money, that dollar, that entire dollar is going toward a scholarship fund is pretty unique in this area," says Sweet Corn Committee Vice Chair Mark Doebrich.
Also unique. The corn on the cob eating contest. Young and old chow down on the kernels for a chance at the title.
The festival is about having fun, but also raising awareness about agriculture.
"And it's an encouragement of students going into agriculture. We celebrate sweet corn in the Mid Ohio Valley some of the best due to sandy soil and the correct nutrients in the soil. And Witten's Farm donates all of the corn that we eat here and it goes to scholarships," says Doebrich.
Other donors help fund those scholarships as well. This year a senior from Fort Frye and Waterford High Schools each received $300 scholarships.
"Well farming is obviously a very proud tradition but a very trying business to maintain and keep it current and flowing. Obviously economic challenges, the cost of college has skyrocketed. And we have a good thing going on here. We'd like to have these students go on to school, become more aware of the agriculture business and come back to the Mid Ohio Valley and keep feeding us this sweet corn and other crops that we're able to raise here," says Doebrich.
