It's a year off, but the race for retiring West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller's seat will bring a multi-million dollar campaign to the state.
West Virginia - although represented by a majority of Democrats on Capitol Hill - didn't vote for President Obama.
Republican Congresswoman Shelly Moore Capito is an early favorite with Democratic Secretary of State Natalie Tennant announcing her campaign.
Senator Joe Manchin says Tennant would make a fine senator and described Capito as a "formidable candidate".
Still, he intends to support the Democratic ticket.
"I support Natalie, and I support (congressional candidate) Nick Casey; I think it's a very good ticket. I never come out against anybody. I'm just supportive of the Democratic ticket we have in front of us," Sen. Manchin says.
Manchin did not make an endorsement in last year's presidential race, telling WTAP he could not support either candidate.
