CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia voters are sending U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin back to Capitol Hill for another six years.

The Democrat defeated Republican John Raese and Bob Henry Baber of the Mountain Party on Tuesday.

Manchin was governor when he beat Raese in 2010 to complete the Senate term left by the late Robert C. Byrd. Then, as now, President Barack Obama's low approval ratings in West Virginia played a role in their race.

Manchin has campaigned as an independent voice for West Virginia who often disagrees with Obama.

Raese has courted the state's tea party movement. He argues that Manchin has helped Obama pursue policies that have harmed the state.

Raese is a multimillionaire business owner from Morgantown. This was Raese's fifth statewide campaign, and his fourth for Senate.
