Valley Gem Makes Historic Trip

An historic departure Saturday in Marietta as the Valley Gem Sternwheeler began a two day journey up the Muskingum River to Zanesville.

It's been 30 years since the Valley Gem has done what it was built to do - that is to travel the Muskingum River.

In order to do so, the vessel had to overcome quite a few obstacles.

Close to 50 passengers boarded the Valley Gem for the historic trip.

The boat is traveling through eight hand-operated locks.

Captain Don Sandford is hoping to make this a yearly tradition if the trip is a success.
