PRESS RELEASE: "To recognize the hard working snowplow drivers, mechanics and support staff of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Washington County Garage, District 10 Deputy Director T. Steve Williams today presented the garage with a sign to commemorate the department recently receiving the American Public Works Association (APWA) Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award.
“This sign represents the hard work and sacrifice you’ve committed to ensure all drivers in Washington County were safe this winter season,” said Deputy Director Williams during the presentation. “I hope everyone who drives past this sign knows what a great public service you provide, I know I do.”
ODOT is the first state department of transportation to ever win the APWA Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award.
To accept the sign on behalf of the garage was Washington County Manager Richard Venham.
Snow and ice removal is ODOT’s core service during the winter months and is vital to keeping businesses running, schools and hospitals open and vital emergency services operating effectively.
“Having a clear route to travel during the winter is not only vital to transporting our product, but more importantly, keeps our drivers safe,” said Broughton Foods Transport Supervisor Matt Oaks.
The APWA Excellence in Snow and Ice Control award recognizes those organizations who promote excellence in the management, administration and best practices in snow and ice removal, while minimizing environmental impacts. There were six categories in which ODOT was judged, they include Materials, Equipment, Training, Community Outreach, Technical and Environmental.
With 126 plow trucks, District 10 is responsible for snow and ice removal on more than 4,000 lane miles, including major routes such Interstate 77, U.S. Route 33 and State Route 7.
During the 2012-2013 winter season, District 10 plow drivers, mechanics and support staff logged more than 36,000 hours, used more than 41,000 tons of salt and invested nearly $5 million for its snow and ice operations."
