Williamstown's police department has five officers.

It's trying to give them some incentive to keep them serving there with a pay raise.

Police Chief B.D. Adkins has asked city council for a $2 an hour pay hike for those officers.

The idea is to make the Williamstown P.D. competitive with departments around the valley, and might also help with recruiting.

"It just takes one (departure) to make you short when you're working 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Adkins says. "When we have a full force, it works out well, and you can cover vacations, sick leave and training."

Chief Adkins says city council proposed 3-5% pay raises before, although not all of them made their way into the city budget.
