The state auditor wants information from the Wood County Commission involving future pay raises for county elected officials.
What's involved here are pay raises authorized at the state level.
The commissioners have to give auditor Glen Gainer information on the county's financial status, but he would decide whether there's money in the county's budget for pay hikes.
The final decision is still up to the elected officials.
"Some elected officials choose to go down to Charleston to lobby for the pay increase; some do not," says Commissioner Blair Couch. "The bottom line is, it's up to the individual elected official to decide how they want to address it."
The commissioners discussed how any pay raises would affect an already-tight budget, including money given to non-governmental agencies.
Couch says agencies such as volunteer fire departments would not get funding cuts.
