UPDATE: Driver Identified in Fatal Accident

Authorities believe they've identified the driver who died in a fiery crash early Monday morning.

Chief Shawn Graham with the Wood County Sheriff's Office says they believe the driver to be 22-year-old Jake Cunningham

They're still waiting on official confirmation from the medical examiner's office.

Cunningham died Monday morning when he crashed his car.

Investigators say the car was heading north on St Marys Pike, when it went off the side of the road, hit a mailbox then hit a telephone pole.

The car then flipped and landed on the road-- where it burst into flames.

Investigators say speed appears to be the main factor.

Investigators are now saying speed was a main factor in an early morning crash that turned deadly.

It all happened on St. Marys Pike where deputies say a driver wrecked his car and was trapped inside whenever it bust into flames.

Deputies say that body is still trying to be identified but they believe it to be a 22-year-old Waverly man.

Investigators say the car was heading north on St. Marys Pike, when it went off the side of the road, hitting a mailbox then swerving back onto the road. "Crossed over into the south bound lane, left the roadway again, struck a telephone box went into a culvert near Valley Mills Road in St. Marys Pike, the vehicle went airborne, flipped and came to rest on it's wheels in the roadway, however pretty much almost immediately the vehicle burst into flames," explains Chief Deputy Shawn Graham.

Investigators say speed appeared to be a factor, and a witness also reported he was going at a high speed.

The medical examiner will identify the body.

Wood County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a fatal accident on St. Marys Pike.

Chief Shawn Graham says the single car accident happened at about 3:50 Monday morning.

A 2005 Pontiac Sunfire wrecked near the entrance to Oak Wood Estates.

The driver was trapped inside when the car burst into flames.

Deputies are unable to ID the driver due to the fire exposure. The body is being sent to the medical examiner's office for identification.

No word yet on what caused the driver to crash.

The Wood County 911 Center says the Wood County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal accident.

They say it happened just before 4 this morning on St. Mary's Pike near Oak Drive.

They say it was a single car accident and one person died.
