Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- A veterans group says at least 1,200 Gulf War veterans across the country have been mistakenly notified by the Veterans Administration that they suffer from Lou Gehrig's disease.

But VA officials say only a small number of veterans have contacted the va indicating they received the letters in error.

The National Gulf War Resource Center says at least 2,500 letters informing veterans of disability benefits were sent, with almost half a mistake.

But VA spokeswoman Katie Roberts said Monday night that only less than 10 people called to say they had gotten an ALS benefits letter, although they did not have the disease.

Lou Gehrig's disease is also known as ALS.

The veterans group says those who received the letters have undiagnosed neurological disorders.
