Morgantown, W.Va. (AP) -- Several West Virginia universities are helping former soldiers transition from battlefield to classroom this fall.

West Virginia University is offering two veterans-only classes, orientation and english 101.

Advocate Terry Miller says they offer a safe, supportive environment.

He says it's WVU's way of thanking soldiers for their service.

If the veterans are recalled to active duty, they'll get refunds.

G.I. Jobs Magazine, meanwhile, has labeled Beckley's Mountain State University a "military friendly school" for its efforts to help veterans.

And at Fairmont State, veterans get priority scheduling and may get housing allowances and help with other expenses.

WVU, Mountain State and Wheeling Jesuit University all offer partial tuition waivers.
