Williamsport, Md. (AP) -- Authorities in Maryland say a 13-year-old West Virginia boy is in extremely critical condition after a fisherman pulled him from the Potomac river.

The Washington County Sheriff's Deputy 1st Class Carl Witmer says the boy from Martinsburg, W.Va., was taken to children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., Tuesday afternoon.

Witmer says the boy and a 14-year-old friend were swimming near an area where warm water from a power plant flows into the river.

He says an Allegheny Power employee heard yelling when the boys were struggling and called 911.

Witmer says a fisherman put dove in and pulled the boy to shore.

The older boy was expected to be held overnight at Washington County Hospital for observation.

Officials did not release the boys' names.
