Columbus, Ohio (AP) -- A physician at Nationwide Children's Hospital says deaths from child abuse have more than doubled from 2007 to 2008 at the columbus hospital.

Dr. Philip Scribano tells the Columbus Dispatch that hospital record show 12 cases of fatal abuse in 2008 compared with five in 2007.

Child-abuse head traumas increased from 24 to 43. And overall abuse cases jumped 26 percent.

Scribano says abuse cases also are up an additional 15 percent through july 2009 compared with the same period last year.

Scribano says an explanation could be the economic decline.

He says stress families experience during tough financial times can manifest in the home.

The hospital is working with Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh to see if there is such a link.
