UPDATED, APRIL 2011
After many years of waiting by WTAP and residents of the Mid-Ohio Valley, WTAP’s NBC and FOX Parkersburg stations were launched by DISH on June 3, 2010. That means that DISH customers in Wood, Washington and Pleasants counties can now receive these two local stations, rather than distant NBC or FOX stations. When a customer activates these local stations, he or she will also begin receiving ABC and CBS stations from Clarksburg and a national feed of PBS.
Also in June 2010, Gray Television and DirecTV entered into an agreement that will allow DirecTV customers in those same three counties to automatically receive distant (NBC or LA) NBC and FOX affiliates if they so choose.
This effectively brings an end to the long-standing “waiver” process that had been in place for more than 10 years, to determine who was and who was not eligible to receive distant signals via satellite in place of the local stations.
If you are a DISH customer, you can now subscribe to WTAP’s NBC and FOX Parkersburg stations as your NBC and FOX stations and the Clarksburg stations as your ABC and CBS stations. Contact Dish or your local Dish retailer/installer.
If you’re a DirecTV customer, you cannot yet receive WTAP’s NBC and FOX Parkersburg stations, but you will be permitted to receive the NY or LA NBC and FOX stations without having to go through the waiver process. DirecTV has WTAP’s permission to launch its local stations whenever DirecTV wants to do so. The ball is entirely in DirecTV’s court to do so.
The reason why this service and policy only affect Wood, Washington and Pleasants counties is because those are the only three counties within WTAP’s DMA (Dominant Market Area). Surrounding counties are in other DMAs. For example:
- Ritchie Co. is in the Clarksburg-Weston DMA
- Wirt Co. is in the Huntington-Charleston DMA
- Noble Co. is in the Wheeling-Steubenville DMA
- Morgan Co. is in the Columbus DMA
WTAP’s three television stations (NBC, FOX Parkersburg, and My5) are still available FREE OVER THE AIR and on every cable system in Wood, Washington and Pleasants counties. One or more of our stations are also available on cable systems in more than a dozen out-lying counties, including those listed above.
