Manchin Urges Seniors To File Federal Returns For Stimulus Money

Charleston, WV (AP) -- Governor Manchin is reminding senior citizens and other West Virginians who don't normally file personal income tax returns that they should this year.

Manchin says that to receive their federal economic stimulus packages quickly, all citizens need to file a federal return.

Manchin says many seniors, veterans, some railroad retirees and low-income West Virginians may not have had to file federal returns for years. But to qualify for the rebate, these individuals must claim a minimum of $3,000 in income. They should also write stimulus payment across the top of the form.

They don't need to file a state return this year if they normally aren't required to.

The state tax department estimates that 646,000 West Virginians are eligible to receive a total of about 732.5-million dollars in federal stimulus payments. The rebates range from $300 to $600 per person.

The filing deadline is Tuesday.
