PETERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - Firefighters contain 70 percent of a wildfire that's burned about 2.5 square miles in Pendleton County.

The fire has been burning since Nov. 10 in the Smoke Hole Area of the Monongahela National Forest about 11 miles southwest of Petersburg. About 170 firefighters and support staff are battling the fire.

The Forest Service says crews focused Tuesday on cleanup work as preparations are made to transfer the handling of the fire to a smaller management team.

No structural damage has been reported.

An emergency closure order prohibits public access to lands in an approximate 3-square-mile area surrounding the fire.

PETERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - The U.S. Forest Service says about 18 states have provided personnel and resources to fight a wildfire burning in the Monongahela National Forest in Pendleton County.

The fire has burned about 2 square miles of forest land and nearby private lands since it was first reported Sunday afternoon. The cause remains under investigation.

As of Thursday morning, the Forest Service says the fire is 20 percent contained.

The Forest Service says 150 people are expected at the site Thursday to fight the fire.

An emergency closure order issued by the agency Wednesday night prohibits public access to lands in an approximate 3-square-mile area surrounding the fire.

The order remains in effect for 120 days, unless the forest supervisor rescinds it.
