Rockefeller Targets McCain At Labor Day Rally

Racine, W.Va. (AP) -- Harsh words from Senator Jay Rockefeller about Republican colleague John McCain helped mark the traditional start of West Virginia's fall election season.

The West Virginia Democrat says McCain's votes on veterans benefits, children's health insurance and clean coal technology show he wouldn't be good for the mountain state.

Rockefeller targeted McCain yesterday during at speech at the United Mine Workers' 70th annual Labor Day rally in Racine.

McCain Spokeswoman Gail Gitcho disputed Rockefeller's criticism of the Republican Presidential Nominee. Gitcho cited McCain's pledge to budget two billion dollars annually toward clean coal technology research.

President Bush took West Virginia in both 2000 and 2004. Most political analysts projected the state will go with the republican candidiate again this year.
