Labor Day Weekend Traffic Deaths Down

Columbus, Ohio (AP) -- The State Highway Patrol says Labor Day weekend traffic deaths fell 42 percent in Ohio as law enforcement agencies had more officers patrolling for drunken drivers.

The patrol says 14 people died in crashes on the state's roads from 6 p.m. Friday through Monday night, down from the 24 who were killed during the comparable reporting period last year.

The holiday weekend brought a close to a national campaign called "over the limit, under arrest," targeting drunken drivers.

The Highway Patrol says its troopers arrested close to 1,700 motorists during the 2 1/2-week crackdown including about 550 over the long Labor Day weekend.
