Columbus, Ohio (AP) -- An attorney representing death row inmate Richard Cooey says Cooey's claim that he committed an unsolved murder is all a misunderstanding.
Cooey is being investigated for remarks he made five years ago alleging he killed a hockey player for beating up his sister.
Cooey made the comments awaiting execution in 2003 prior to receiving a last-minute reprieve.
He's scheduled to die next month for killing two college students.
Akron Law Professor Dana Cole says Cooey was talking about what he'd do to someone if he hurt his sister in a similar fashion.
Cole says Cooey's remarks were misunderstood by a prison employee keeping a log of Cooey's last day.
Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh is continuing her investigation of the claim.
