Daniels, W.Va. (AP) -- Organizers of a drive to collect golf balls for soldiers stationed abroad hope to deliver their version of an Operation Mulligan to the deserts of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Glade Springs Assistant Golf Pro Justin Beard said the resort's goal was to collect 8,000 balls but they ended up with more than 10,000.
Beard says many golfers who are members at Glade Springs are veterans and they wanted to do something for the soldiers serving overseas.
The golf balls were donated to the local National Guard Thursday.
Operation Mulligan was launched on Memorial Day and ended on Labor Day.
Beard said veterans told him hitting golf balls is a favorite recreational pastime of many military men and women stationed overseas, and some bases in the Middle East have makeshift driving ranges.
