Washington (AP) -- The amount of money needed to fund road, bridge and other transit projects is shrinking.
Since motorists are driving fewer miles and buying less gasoline these days, the commission that oversees Financing for Transportation says it's time to raise the federal gas tax.
Members of the National Commission on Surface Transportation infrastructure financing say they plan to release a report later this month asking congress to raise the gas tax by 10 cents a gallon, and the diesel tax by 12-to-15 cents a gallon.
The current tax rates are 18.4 cents per gallon for gas, and 24.4 cents a gallon for diesel.
Adrian Moore is one of 15 members on the commission. He says simply "We can either let the roads go to hell or we can pay more."
