Fairmont, W.Va. (AP) -- A West Virginia official says investigators have been unable to determine what caused a fire that killed a 68-year-old Fairmont man.

Assistant State Fire Marshal Mackey Ayersman said in an e-mail Friday that he and insurance company investigators have been stymied by a large number of potential sources for the Dec. 29 fire at the Fairmont Arbors Aapartments.

Ayersman says many of the potential sources are encased in melted plastic, which further complicates the investigation.

However, Ayersman says nothing about the building, which had hallway sprinklers and smoke detectors, contributed to the fire.

Authorities believe the victim, John A. Hassler, died of smoke inhalation.
