HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Four former Western Regional Jail correctional officers and four inmates face charges of plotting to kill another prisoner.
Each inmate is charged with attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy.
Three of the former officers are charged with aiding and abetting attempted murder. Another is charged with accessory before the fact to attempted first-degree murder.
Media outlets report that the suspects were charged in an indictment unsealed Friday.
The indictment says the plot occurred last October and targeted 19-year-old Zachary Matthew Lawson. Lawson was in custody at the jail awaiting trial on sexual abuse and assault charges involving a 12-year-old boy. He has since been moved to another jail.
West Virginia Jail Authority executive director Joe DeLong tells media outlets that the officers are no longer employed with his agency.
