Ex-WVU Provost Wants Misconduct Hearing Halted

Morgantown, W.Va. (AP) -- Former Provost Gerald Lang wants a court to stop West Virginia University's March hearing on whether he committed academic misconduct.

Lang claims some of those involved have conflicts of interest.

He says several attorneys were consulted on the October 2007 decision to retroactively grant the Governor's daughter, Heather Bresch, a master's degree she didn't earn.

The scandal forced Lang to resign as Chief Academic Officer, though he remains on the university payroll earning more than $200,000.

Former WVU President Mike Garrison told the Associated Press on Friday that he has never been conducted by the office of academic integrity. Nor does he have a hearing before its committee.

The incident involving the degree led to Garrison's resignation last summer.

Lang initially wanted his complaint about the proceeding kept secret. But Monongalia County Circuit Judge Susan Tucker unsealed it after a challenge by the Dominion Post.
