Morgantown, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia University students who may have been exposed to bacterial meningitis are being treated with antibiotics as a precaution.
Jan Palmer, Director of Student Health, says the students spent time with a 19-year-old female who fell ill over the weekend.
She's now being treated for symptoms that could be linked to bacterial meningitis, but Palmer says the diagnosis hasn't been confirmed with lab results yet.
The student lives off campus, and WVU is working with her friends to identify anyone she may have encountered.
Meningitis can be spread through intimate and casual contact.
Anyone who develops a stiff neck, headache, high fever, vomiting and sore throat should seek immediate medical attention.
