Charleston, WV (AP) -- Foes of a bill that would tax the drug methadone turned out in force at the state capitol Tuesday to condemn the proposal as discriminatory against patients seeking treatment.

Many of those who testified at the public hearing were either employees or patients in clinics owned by CRC Health Group. The California-based company owns seven of the nine clinics in West Virginia that dispense methadone for drug treatment.

The bill would impose a tax of one dollar per day per dose of methadone, which would raise about $1.5 million annually.

Supporters say that money can be spent on drug abuse prevention and treatment.
