WV Senate Advances School Calendar Reform Measure

Charleston, WV (AP) -- The state Senate has passed a bill that would start the school year two weeks before labor day in a bid to make sure students get 180 days a year in the classroom.

The measure has been changed significantly since Gov. Joe Manchin introduced it in the midst of a school year where as many as 52 counties may fall short of the 180-day mark.

The latest version not only starts the school year earlier, it also doesn't count as work days any school day in which class is canceled by 4:30 a.m. That was a compromise with state teachers unions, who objected to an earlier proposal to make the standard 6 a.m.

The senate proposal also encourages counties to finish the first 90-day semester by December 23.

The bill now goes to the House of Delegates.
