WV Senate Rejects Calorie Counting Bill

Charleston, WV (AP) -- The state senate has voted 19-14 to reject a bill that would have required restaurant chains to post calorie counts on menu items for customers to review while ordering.

The bill was part of a set of recommendations stemming from a task force assembled last year to suggest changes to West Virginia's health care system.

Senators who supported the bill included two physicians who talked about the serious problems stemming from obesity in the state.

None of the 19 senators who voted against the measure on Monday spoke against it from the floor. One senator was absent and did not vote.

Senate health committee chairman Roman Prezioso says he's disappointed, but is pushing ahead with the other bills stemming from the task force's work.
