Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia is closer to qualifying for federal stimulus funds by updating its fire and building codes. But some state lawmakers question the resulting cost.
The House of Delegates voted 73-26 Tuesday to pass the proposal from Gov. Joe Manchin to the Senate.
The bill would adopt the latest federal rules regarding fire and building safety called for in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
But critics say these emerging federal standards lack details. They also question the federal provisions requiring energy efficient windows, heating systems and the like in 90 percent of new homes.
They cite industry estimates that the bill would add $10,500 in materials costs alone for new houses.
Supporters tout the potential savings in energy bills.
