Fairmont, WV (AP) -- Another student in West Virginia has been diagnosed with the potentially life-threatening strain of meningitis.

Marion County Health Department nursing director Cyndee Kiger said a Lincoln High School student was being treated at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg for bacterial meningitis.

The state Bureau for Public Health is working with health officials in Marion and Harrison counties to ensure that students have access to antibiotics.

Kiger said another student at the Shinnston school who was hospitalized last month with the disease has responded to treatment.

On March 2, a 19-year-old freshman at West Virginia University, Chelsea Kanatus of Virginia, died of the disease.

Meningitis spreads by human saliva or mucous.
