Ohio's Military Families Need Volunteer Time, Work

Columbus, Ohio (AP) -- Volunteers across Ohio are offering their services to military families who no longer need care packages, but could use some help in the form of time and labor.

Those willing to chip in came out of the woodwork after the Ohio National Guard hosted a series of town hall meetings aimed at drumming up support.

One man travels across Ohio barbecuing at pre-deployment and welcome home ceremonies for soldiers.

Another patched a leaky roof for a deployed soldier's wife.

One woman pet-sat dogs and cats while guard members spent weekends at drill training.

And an accountant offered to prepare taxes for hundreds of service members.

The guard is hosting another round of town halls starting April 14 and hopes the meetings will inspire more people to help military families.
