Dayton, Ohio (AP) -- School districts pushing tax issues have had to come up with new and inventive ways to campaign as the economy squeezes donations and budgets.
Many districts have gone online and relied on parent volunteers instead of spending thousands of dollars on printing and mailing for Tuesday's elections.
Scott Ebright of the Ohio School Boards Association says the tough economic times call for new strategies and new technologies for winning school levy votes.
He says districts must be creative.
Younger teachers and parent volunteers are using Facebook, the free social networking web site, to appeal to their friends and neighbors for school levy support.
Ebright says districts have discovered that e-mail and Facebook are not only cheap ways to reach younger voters, but also a means of selectively targeting their supporters while not stirring up opponents with yard signs and billboards.
