Weirton Hospital Settles Patient-Death Lawsuit

Weirton, W.Va. (AP) -- Weirton Medical Center will pay $2 million to settle a lawsuit over the death of a woman whose stomach was perforated during surgery.

Geoff Brown, attorney for the family of Genevieve Haught, says the perforation went undetected for days, causing an infection that killed the Weirton woman in 2005.

Haught's lawyers had argued that a urologist was allowed to operate without supervision, despite having only performed the procedure once before.

They also claim the surgery to remove a kidney mass was unnecessary because haught was cancer-free.

Hospital spokesman Kevin Brown acknowledged the settlement Thursday and said it was the best course of action to bring the matter to closure.
