Huntington, WV (AP) -- Boaters are being asked to be safe as the summer recreation season kicks off this weekend.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that about 6,000 drowning deaths occur every year in the United States.
The Corps issued a list of water safety tips. Among them, boaters are urged to never swim alone or use alcohol while on the water and have life jackets available for everyone on board.
Several lakes within the Huntington district have established stations where boaters can borrow life jackets and return them when they're finished participating in water activities.
